Residence permit questions
Residence permit issues continue to be some of the most pressing issues for foreigners coming to Turkey.
I mentioned the residence permit regulations in my article, dated Jan. 22. However, questions continue to arise on the same subject. The first of these questions is from Mohammad Ayaz. He asks:
“Dear Sir;
I read your article on the web on residence permit rules 2011. I am a Pakistani graduated from Boğaziçi University in 1985 as an electrical (electronics) engineer and at that time stayed here for six and a half years. I have come to Turkey after 25 years in September 2010 and have just got a residence permit for 15 days from Emniyet. Actually now I have a job offer from a Turkish firm. I want to apply to the Labor Ministry for a work permit, but I think I need a residence permit that is valid for six months. Kindly let me know how I can apply for a six-month residence permit or renew mine for six months enabling me to conform to Ministry of Labor requirements. Best regards, Mohammad Ayaz.”
Dear Mohammad Ayaz, before the work permit application, you have to apply for a long-term residence permit. However, before the application, you have to open a bank account (at a Turkish bank) and deposit $300 for each month – meaning you must deposit $1800 for the six months. Then, you can apply for a long-term residence permit. For the application, you should prepare these documents:
- Residence declaration form (ikamet beyanname formu),
- 4 photographs,
- Your passport,
- Your passport photocopy and
- Bank account document.
After receiving the six-month residence permit, you can apply for the work permit.
[HH] Renewing a residence permit
The second question about residence permits comes from Richard. He says:
“Hello Sir,
Can you answer some questions for me? I will have lived in Turkey for five years as of September 2011. What are the options available to me after the five years are completed? Are the residency permit fees/restrictions about to change, as they have done for some Baltic countries? Will I be able to apply for my Turkish kimlik, as I have not exceeded the six months’ restriction, and what does that involve? I apologize for the number of questions, but am finding it difficult to get straight answers on these matters. If you are unable to answer these questions, can you please forward them to someone who can? Kind Regards, Richard.”
Dear Richard, I do not forward your questions to anyone. I try to answer as I can myself. After the expiry of a residence permit, you can renew it four times. However, you must apply again to the security authorities within 15 days of the expiration of permit. As in the first residence permit, the renewal application must be made to the local security directorate (Emniyet Müdürlüğü). Also, the Baltic states did not make any changes to their residence permits.
